The company is planning to release a new enterprise-focused solution called Drive File Stream, which will roll out to all G Suite Basic, Business, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofit domains later this year. Google says that business users - meaning those on G Suite - shouldn’t download this new software utility at this time. Your photos and videos, meanwhile, will be available in Google Photos.īoth products‘ websites are currently hosting the updated software, which is a free download for consumers. After the back up is complete, your files can be accessed in Google Drive from any device - including your computer, phone or tablet. In addition to backing up files on your desktop computer, the new software also can be used to back up photos from USB-connected devices, like cameras, as well as SD cards. Because it’s replacing current users’ existing Google Drive installations, the tool will respect any current settings you’ve already specified on Mac and PC, Google explained last month, when it announced the tool was in the works.
The new tool offers a simple user interface, where you’ll first sign into your Google account, then select the folders you want Google to continually back up to Google Drive. Inside Applications, find the Google Drive app and drag it to the Trash on your Dock, or right-click it and choose Move to Trash. If you don't see it on the left sidebar, it's also available under Go > Applications on the menu bar, or by using the shortcut Shift + Cmd + A. Open Finder and navigate to the Applications folder. The process to remove Google Drive from your Mac is just like uninstalling any other macOS app. Then you should be able to uninstall it without issue. In the dialog box that shows, click Quit to stop Google Drive from running. To do this, click its icon in your System Tray as described above, then click the Settings cog in the resulting menu.
In case you get an error that Google Drive is still performing operations, you should quit Google Drive before uninstalling it.
Your Google Drive folder will stick around, but it's cut off from your account. Once this is done, you'll need to reinstall the app if you want to start syncing files to this computer again.
